Car Key Replacement Options Explained

Car key replacement is not a one-size-fits-all process. The right approach depends on the vehicle make, model, year and the type of key system originally fitted.

Standard Cut Keys

Older vehicles may use a simple metal key that only needs to be cut to match the lock and ignition, without any electronic programming involved.

Transponder Keys

Many vehicles from the late 1990s onwards use a transponder chip embedded in the key. These keys need to be cut and then programmed so the vehicle immobiliser recognises the chip.

Remote and Smart Keys

Newer vehicles often use remote or smart keys that combine a cut key or proximity chip with remote central locking functions. Replacement usually involves both cutting and programming.
