What Is a Transponder Chip?

A transponder chip is a small electronic component embedded in the key. When the key is inserted or brought near the ignition, the vehicle sends a signal that the chip responds to.

Why the Immobiliser Checks the Chip

If the vehicle immobiliser does not recognise the chip signal, it prevents the engine from starting, even if the metal cut of the key is correct. This is why a freshly cut transponder key will not start the car until it has been programmed.

Signs of a Transponder Issue

• The vehicle cranks but does not start
• A security or immobiliser warning light appears on the dashboard
• The key works in the door but not in the ignition

Getting a Transponder Key Programmed

Programming is typically carried out using diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle, allowing a mobile locksmith to complete the process at the vehicle location.
