Common Reasons Car Remotes Stop Working
A car remote that suddenly stops locking or unlocking the vehicle can be frustrating, but the cause is often one of a small number of common issues.
Flat or Weak Battery
The most common cause of a remote losing range or failing altogether is a flat or weakening battery. This is usually the first thing worth checking.
Physical Wear and Damage
Buttons that have worn out, cracked casings or water exposure can all affect how reliably a remote functions over time.
Loss of Programming
In some cases, a remote can lose its programmed link with the vehicle, particularly after battery disconnection or certain electrical faults, requiring the remote to be reprogrammed.
When to Seek Assistance
- A new battery has been tried and the remote still does not work
- The remote works inconsistently or only at very close range
- More than one remote for the same vehicle has stopped working
